JUICE PRODUCTS ASSOCIATION STATEMENT ON FRUIT JUICE

The juice products industry has always been committed to producing safe and wholesome products and to following applicable Federal and state laws and regulations.

Regulatory authorities and scientists recognize that trace minerals such as lead naturally occur in soil and are naturally drawn from soil into plants, including those that produce fruit from which fruit juice is made.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the federal agency primarily responsible for ensuring the safety of the U.S. food supply, has reviewed the available data on lead and recommended a maximum level of 50 parts per billion (ppb) in juice.  In its guidance to industry FDA states, “we recommend that you establish controls to ensure that lead levels do not exceed 50 ppb.”1  The juice industry recognizes the FDA guidance as setting the appropriate safe level for lead in juice.

Both the juice products industry and the FDA take extensive steps to assure the continual safety of juice products in the U.S. marketplace. Juice producers follow the rigorous manufacturing requirements that are imposed by the hazard analysis critical control (HACCP) regulations, a comprehensive system of preventative controls that ensures the safety of food products.  FDA conducts routine inspections of the juice industry to ensure companies comply with the applicable regulatory requirements.

JPA always recommends that children consume 100% fruit juice in amounts consistent with the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The Juice Products Association is the trade association representing the fruit and juice products industry. JPA includes processors, packers, extractors, brokers and marketers of fruit and vegetable juices, juice beverages, fruit jams, jellies and preserves and similar products, as well as industry suppliers and food testing laboratories.
